Today marks the 117th anniversary of the Battle of Adwa, site of a crucial Ethiopian victory over vastly superior Italian invaders at the famous Battle of Adwa in 1986 under the leadership of Emperor Menilik II.
The famous victory came as surprise to European colonial powers that had no choice but recognize Ethiopia as a sovereign state and secured it the distinction of being the only African nation to successfully resist European colonialism with a decisive show of force. The Battle of Adwa, in which Ethiopian forces under Emperor Menelik II united to defeat an invading force, was one of the most significant turning points in the history of modern Africa.
The actual battle took place on March 1 and 2 1896 in Adwa.
